PILOT PROGRAM FOR ACTIVATION

The Monterey Boulevard Business Association in San Francisco sought to utilize City Grant Participatory Budget funding in order to find a cost-effective way to improve and activate a busy intersection within their district.

Together, they created a solution which had a positive impact on the corner, as well as served as a model for improving other corners in the neighborhood. To stay within the budget, the project aimed to retain as much of the existing infrastructure as feasible, while still creating a visible change. Colored, patterned concrete and prefabricated planters and benches were used to create a achievable project within the set budget.

The activation of Monterey Boulevard invigorates the area, creates a space that is worth stopping by, and creates an identity for the neighborhood.
